Physiological and Molecular Characterization of Malassezia pachydermatis Reveals No Differences between Canines and Their Owners  [PDF]

Open Journal of Veterinary Medicine (OJVM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojvm.2018.87010
Abstract: Introduction: The genus Malassezia comprises 17 species of commensal and pathogenic yeasts of homeotherms animal skin. The most common species are M. furfur, M. globosa, and M. sympodialis in humans and M. pachydermatis in animals. However, some publications have reported potentially serious human infections by M. pachydermatis in individuals with risk factors and the isolation of human species from domestic animals. Given the scarcity of information about their capacity for transmission between hosts and zoonotic potential, the aim of the present study was to physiologically and molecularly characterize Malassezia spp. isolates obtained from canines and their human owners. Materials and Methods: An experimental study was conducted at the Veterinary Clinic of Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas y Ambientales of Bogotá (Colombia) from July 2015 to December 2016. Phenotypic identification and molecular characterization via the amplification of the 5.8S rDNA- ITS2 and 26S rDNA gene regions, nucleic acid sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses were performed on isolates originating from canines with otitis externa and from the skin of healthy owners compatible with Malassezia spp. Results: Eighty samples were cultured, of which 32 (40%) were suggestive of Malassezia spp. A total of 29 out of 46 (63%) isolates in canines and 3 out of 34 (9%) isolates in humans corresponded entirely with M. pachydermatis. Isolates from the canines and their owners presented similar behavior in biochemical and phospholipase activity tests, 100% molecular sequence identities, and close proximity in the phylogenetic trees. Conclusion: The isolation of M. pachydermatis from humans and their dogs with identity based on biochemical, physiological, molecular, and phylogenetic perspectives indicate the ability of this species to adapt to new hosts and its potential for zoonotic transmission. These findings contribute to knowledge of the ecology of this important fungus in human and veterinary medicine.
Variabilidad circadiana de la tasa de captura y la estructura de tallas en camarones e ictiofauna acompa?ante en la pesquería de arrastre del Mar Caribe de Colombia

Abstract: diel-associated changes of catch rates and size-structure of shrimp (farfantepenaeus notialis and f. brasiliensis), incidental catches, discards and the twelve most caught fish species of each of the two shrimp trawling fishing zones (northern and southern) of the colombian caribbean sea were examined. data were obtained by on board observers between july and september 2004. although individuals shrimps in daytime catches were larger in size, shrimp catch rates were significantly higher at nightime, wich confirm the nocturnal activity of the shimps (penaeidae).higher catch rates and few large individuals of predator fish species were observed during daytime. the total catch (mostly discarded, small-sized species) was significantly higher at night. observed circadian variability in catch rates and size composition suggests diel rhythms in activity of examined species and indicates that the abundance indexes can be biased if sampling is not randomised by time of day. high amounts of discarded small sized individuals reveal a heavy fishing pressure in the region and indicate the urgent need for management measures to mitigate impacts of trawling
COMPARING K-DOMINANCE CURVES: YET ANOTHER SUGGESTION
García,Camilo B.;
Boletín de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras - INVEMAR , 1993,
Abstract: a simple procedure is presented which facilitates the comparison of k-dominance curves and permits statistical comparison of replicated curves. two indices are proposed, one for diversity (kdi) and one for dominance (kdo), which summarize the relationships in terms of diversity between one assemblage and all the others in a given set of data, as it is depicted by k-dominance curves.
QUANTITATIVE DATA ON THE FOREST STRUCTURE OF A SMALL MANGROVE FORMATION IN THE BAY OF NENGUANGE, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN

Abstract: inferencial medical model compares what is directly observed by the therapist with shapes of symptomatic reference. the perceptual model used in a complementary way includes other aspects than more symptoms in order to establish a diagnosis. one can then incorporate phenomenon observed in a wider sease. dysthymia represents a crucial point to understand the depressive spectrum. the article intends to promote the study of the dysthymic phenomenon by means of perceptual experience, emphasizing therapeutic relation as a starting point of our diagnostic process and therapeutic goals.
FENOMENOLOGíA Y DISTIMIA DYSTHYMIA AND PHENOMENOLOGY

Trophic levels of fish species of commercial importance in the Colombian Caribbean
García,Camilo B; Contreras,Cristian Camilo;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2011,
Abstract: ecological studies on commercial important fish species are of great value to support resource management issues. this study calculated trophic levels of those colombian caribbean fish species whose diet has been locally described. usable diet data of 119 species resulted in 164 trophic level estimates. an ordinary regression model relating trophic level and fish size was formulated. the regression slope was positive and significantly different from zero (p<0.05) suggesting a scaling of trophic level with fish size. both the list of trophic levels and the regression model should be of help in the formulation of trophic indicators and models of neotropical ecosystems. rev. biol. trop. 59 (3): 1195-1203. epub 2011 september 01.
